New here? Rodeo in 90 seconds →
Pro rodeo runs nine official events. Roughstock: bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding (8-second clock, scored). Timed: tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, steer roping (clock measured to the hundredth). All-around: same rider, two events, year-end money totaled.
The pro tour is sanctioned by the PRCA (men's seven events + breakaway) and the WPRA (barrel racing, breakaway, all-around). Season runs October to September. Top 15 in each event on regular-season earnings qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas (the NFR) every December. The pro tour pays roughly $50 million in regular-season prize money.
Below pro: NIRA (college, eleven regions, finals at CNFR in Casper each June), NHSRA (high school, state-by-state through the National Finals in Rock Springs), plus junior and little britches under the same umbrella.
The animal half: bucking stock (bulls and broncs) is its own discipline. Top contractors get paid to haul their string, and the animals get scored on the difficulty of the buck. See /stock for the season's leaders.
